Ayahuasca use in the New Age context - September 2017

Speaker: Dr. Jacques Mabit. Founder and Executive President of the Takiwasi Center. Lecture delivered at the International Transpersonal Conference 2017, Track: Shamanism and Its Potential for Modern Man. Prague, Czech Republic. 29-09-2017. Interpreter: Susana Bustos, Ph.D. Over the last years, ayahuasca has come to represent the probably most widely-used substance in the context of the search for meaning and the mental health context on a global scale. This exponentially rising usage has so far mainly drawn on currents from the new-age movement, rather than on concepts from the scientific paradigm or from Judeo-Christian spiritual or religious traditions. Yet, some features of the new-age movement are in stark contrast to the traditional medicines paradigm, as well as to the indigenous groups this medicine originally stems from. We wish to highlight some of these contradictions, as well as the dangers and confusions they may hold. Another version of the video with slides: Ayahuasca use in the New Age context

Ayahuasca, rituality and interpretation - April 2017

At the Takiwasi Center ayahuasca is used always as part of a process and is ingested in a ritual setting. What is defended is not ayahuasca, but a certain ritualized use of this plant. Rituals are part of the life of the human being since he began to look for a way to give meaning to life and death, and serve to formalize and mark stages in the growth of the human being. The symbolic function of ritual in the framework of the ayahuasca session help to give it a meaning on different levels: at the physical level, that of the ordinary life, and at the spiritual level. A conversation with Fabienne Bâcle, psychotherapist at Takiwasi Center.

Coca and Ayahuasca, same destiny? - October 2016

Speaker: Dr. Jacques Mabit. Founder and Executive President of the Takiwasi Center. Lecture delivered at the II World Ayahuasca Conference, ICEERS Foundation, Río Branco, Brazil, 21-10-2016. While Peru built the magnificent Inca civilization aided by the wisdom provided by balanced use of the coca leaf, then became the largest producer of toxic derivatives of this desecrated plant. Today the coca leaf permits the treatment of cocaine addiction, as is shown by the experience of the Takiwasi Center. On the other hand, the healing use of ayahuasca had been discovered over a few decades ago, and resulted in an explosion of usage worldwide. Will the accelerated desecration of this medicine reach the same extremes of misuse as that of Coca? What can we learn from the tragic path followed by Coca abuse in relation to the use of Ayahuasca? What did the use of Coca in the West respond to, and what does the use of Ayahuasca today respond to?
